About the Botanischer Garten der Justus-Liebig Universität Giessen

History Of The Botanical Garden

The foundation of the garden was in 1609. Landlord Ludwig V of Hessen donated the newly founded university a patch of the old palace garden for the purpose of laying out a "hortus medicus". The credit falls to the Botanical Garden of Giessen to be the oldest university garden in Germany, which is still at its first location.
