About the Botanical Garden of the University of Zagreb

It was in 1889 that Dr Antun Heinz, Professor of Botany, founded the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. The Garden is situated on the south side of Marulic square. Since 1971, the Botanical Garden has enjoyed statutory protection as a natural monument. Most of the Garden is occupied by a park-arboretum laid out in the style of an English landscape garden. The floral perterre is constructed in French style, with strictly symmetrical lines. In the eastern part of the Garden there are two small ponds in which water lilies grow, while swamp cypresses are to be found along the banks. Wild plants are grown on rock gardens.A systematic field in the southeast part of the Garden contains plants that are principally meant for students and botany studies.
The glasshouses are not open to the public, but most items in the collection of tropical and subtropical plants can be seen outdoors in the summer. Some 6 000 different plant taxons are grown in the Botanical Garden.
